Day One: Kindergarten

Aug 6, 2015

How will she know which is snack and which is lunch?  Is it enough food?  healthy? too messy? what are the other kids going to have?  Let’s practice opening the container at breakfast to make sure she can do it. Braids.  Can’t have her hair falling out all over the place or dropping in her food or art.  Is this skirt too short?  Gotta...

Preschool Graduate

Two years of hard work learning and growing (disguised as full-on social fun) and our baby has closed the books on preschool. She has come so far since she first walked in that classroom — and I’m pretty sure she enjoyed every minute of it, considering the ways she talked about the teachers, her friends, and the bus.  This is her superstar teaching staff. ...

With Whitney on the verge of Kindergarten we’ve had to put on some serious pants and think through the education considerations ahead.  Decisions will have to be made, services likely advocated for, and all about a future that we cannot foresee.  This is tough stuff, friends. I suppose education decisions are something all parents have to go through: public or private?  or home school? ...

First Day of School — for the fashionably late. Because we were in Denver for almost two months, the kids only just started school this week. Whitney was so excited she put on her backpack and shoes with her pajamas and barely agreed to eat breakfast and put real clothes on.  She rode the bus like a champ and came home and clearly pronounced...

One of the hardest things about coming to Denver was that Whitney would be missing school.  We love Whitney’s teacher at her public Pre-K program.  Whitney likes going to school and we really saw her development progress throughout the year last year.  She has an IEP (Individualized Education Plan) with goals in various developmental areas.  Some of her cognitive goals are about recognizing colors/shapes/letters,...

Summer School Dropout

Jun 26, 2014

As of Monday, we have dropped Whitney out of summer school. While we had been excited about her continuing progress this summer since her preschool progress was so great, the summer situation the district offered just didn’t make sense for us.  Why?  Well, first off, the bus wanted to pick her up at 6:30am (for an 8am start time).  um. no.  None of us...

Preschool Graduation

She graduated!!! …to another year of preschool, that is. She’ll be in the same classroom with the same teaching team with a few of the same classmates next year. One big change is that Dylan will be doing private preschool at the classroom next door (they share the playground) for two mornings each week. We are very happy with how this year went for...

Beginners Ballet

Feb 22, 2014

Whitney had her first ballet class on Thursday. 45 minutes, 1 teacher, 17 girls between 3 and 8 years old. I was amazed at the class! The teacher is fantastic, leading the kids through real ballet (I mean real…french, twirls, arabesques, spotting) in a fun way that they were all trying their hardest to mimic.  I really like how it was taught.  Whitney did okay. ...

My kids LOVE the iPad.  Often, when Whitney is still groggy and disheveled from her nap she’ll Frankenstein to the office (where inevitably one of us is working) and walk straight up to the iPad without so much as an acknowledgement.  She’ll filter through apps like it’s her job.  While the naturalist in me is constantly considering putting more and more limitations on “screen...

It seems Whitney is thriving at school!  I’m especially appreciative of how her communication is improving as she attempts to speak more words.  She loves singing along to songs with the few words she can remember.  Today she had two fairy stickers on her hand for successful pee pee in the potty.  Woo hoo!  I get along with her teacher very well.  I’m contemplating...

My sweet Big Girl. Oh my word, Mamas, how do you find it in you to let your kids go? Is this snack good enough? Do you need fishies AND graham crackers? or maybe cookies. oh what if she feels like string cheese. is this enough? too much? what if she wants what the other kid is having. what’s his mom packing him right...

FIRST trip to the Dollar Store for the kids (and first in a long time for me) – wow, what an easy place to spend money!  Our finds brought on a few other firsts…..  FIRST tea party, attended by our new spiders. FIRST home recorder jam session….yes, Whitney plays it however she wants.  I liken this to something in between Kenny G, and...
